Kankaria Carnival 2025 Draws Record Crowd as Authorities Shut All Gates After Over 100,000 Visitors Flood Lakefront

Ahmedabad, India-December 27, 2025

Kankaria Carnival 2025: Kankaria Lakefront witnessed an unprecedented surge of visitors on Saturday evening as more than one lakh people gathered to experience the festivities of Kankaria Carnival 2025, forcing civic authorities to temporarily shut all seven entry gates to ensure public safety and prevent overcrowding.

Organised by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the week-long carnival, running from December 25 to December 31, has once again emerged as one of western India’s most popular year-end cultural events. However, the third day of the carnival turned into a major crowd-management challenge when visitor numbers exceeded expectations within a short span of time.

By approximately 9:15 pm, officials confirmed that between 80,000 and 100,000 people were present inside the Kankaria Lakefront complex. With the density of visitors rising rapidly and the risk of congestion increasing, the AMC implemented its pre-planned crowd control protocol and ordered the immediate closure of all entry points.

No additional visitors were allowed inside until the crowd reduced to safer levels.

All Seven Gates Closed to Prevent Overcrowding

According to officials stationed at the venue, all seven entry gates leading into the Kankaria Carnival grounds were sealed simultaneously as a precautionary measure. This decision was taken to avoid any possibility of stampede, panic, or medical emergencies, particularly given the presence of families, children, and senior citizens.

Municipal officials clarified that the closure was not due to any untoward incident but was instead a proactive safety move based on real-time crowd data.

“When attendance approaches the upper safety threshold, gate closures are automatically triggered under our crowd management system,” an AMC official said.

Until a significant number of visitors exited the premises, no new entry was permitted, despite large queues forming outside the venue.

Weekend Rush Fuels Massive Turnout

Saturday’s record attendance was largely attributed to the weekend rush, with Sunday being a holiday for many residents. Families from across Ahmedabad, as well as visitors from neighbouring cities and districts, poured into the lakefront to enjoy the carnival’s entertainment lineup, food stalls, cultural shows, and recreational attractions.

Every year, Kankaria Carnival draws lakhs of visitors, but Kankaria Carnival 2025 has seen a particularly strong response due to its expanded programming, improved facilities, and heightened public interest following the pandemic-era restrictions of previous years.

By early evening, pedestrian traffic had already exceeded normal levels, and by nightfall, the lakefront was packed to capacity.

Carnival Closed at 10 PM After Third Day’s Events Conclude

Saturday marked the third official day of Kankaria Carnival 2025. As per standard protocol, the carnival activities concluded at 10:00 pm.

However, authorities decided to close entry gates nearly 45 minutes before closing time after witnessing a sharp spike in visitor inflow. Once the gates were closed, they remained shut for the remainder of the night.

During this period, security personnel and civic volunteers focused on facilitating an orderly exit of visitors, ensuring that crowd dispersal happened gradually and safely.

Despite the massive turnout, officials confirmed that the evening passed without any major incident, crediting careful planning and real-time monitoring.

Live Music and Cultural Performances Steal the Spotlight

The third day of the carnival featured a diverse lineup of performances across multiple stages, offering something for audiences of all age groups.

At Stage 1 near Pushpak Gate No. 1, popular Gujarati singer Parth Oza captivated the crowd with his energetic vocals and traditional melodies, turning the venue into a sea of swaying lights and applause.

Music, dance, and folk performances remained a constant draw throughout the evening, contributing significantly to the surge in attendance.

Advanced Crowd Management Technology Used for the First Time

For the first time in the history of the event, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation deployed a technology-driven crowd management system at Kankaria Lakefront.

Head-Count Cameras at Entry and Exit Gates

Each of the seven entry and exit gates was equipped with head-count cameras, capable of calculating:

  • Number of people entering
  • Number of people exiting
  • Total real-time occupancy inside the venue

This data was transmitted live to the Paldi Command and Control Centre, allowing officials to make instant decisions based on accurate crowd metrics.

When attendance reached the critical range of 80,000 to 100,000 visitors, alerts were generated, prompting the immediate closure of gates.

CCTV Surveillance Across 34 Locations

In addition to head-count cameras, 34 CCTV cameras were installed across key locations within the Kankaria Lakefront, including:

  • Entry and exit gates
  • Major performance stages
  • Pedestrian corridors
  • High-density gathering points

Live footage from these cameras was monitored simultaneously at the on-site police control room and the central command centre, ensuring swift response capability.

Drone Surveillance Enhances Security

Authorities also deployed drone surveillance to monitor crowd movement from above, particularly in areas where foot traffic was dense.

The drones provided a comprehensive aerial view of visitor flow, helping officials identify congestion points and adjust crowd movement strategies in real time.

Officials stated that drone monitoring played a crucial role in ensuring smooth exits and preventing bottlenecks.

Long Queues Outside as Visitors Await Entry

Even after all gates were closed, long queues of visitors remained outside the Kankaria premises, hoping to gain entry once the crowd thinned.

Police personnel and civic volunteers were stationed outside to manage these queues, explain the situation to the public, and ensure calm.

Authorities reiterated that the gate closures were strictly temporary and solely aimed at safeguarding public safety.
