LPG Crisis Hits Coimbatore Hotels: Service Timings Cut, Menus Reduced Amid Supply Disruptions

Hotels across Coimbatore are scaling back their operations after a sudden disruption in LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) supply, a situation triggered by global tensions linked to the Israel–Iran conflict. The shortage has forced several restaurants and eateries in the district to reduce service hours and trim their menus as they attempt to cope with limited fuel availability.

The issue surfaced after oil marketing companies informed hotels in Coimbatore on Monday, March 9, 2026, that the supply of commercial LPG cylinders would be affected due to international geopolitical developments. As a result, restaurants that rely heavily on LPG for cooking are now facing operational challenges.

Major Restaurant Groups Announce Menu Restrictions

One of the most well-known restaurant chains in the city, the Sree Annapoorna Sree Gowrishankar Group, issued a notice to customers late Monday night. The announcement stated that the restaurant would temporarily limit its menu to essential dishes while restricting the availability of certain items to specific hours of the day.

The move is aimed at conserving available LPG cylinders and ensuring that basic food services continue for customers despite the supply disruption.

Hotels Forced to Modify Operations

According to K.A. Ramaswamy, President of the Coimbatore District Hoteliers Association, the halt in LPG supply began on Tuesday, March 10. The association represents around 262 hotels in the district, many of which depend entirely on commercial LPG cylinders for daily cooking operations.

Ramaswamy explained that hotels are currently relying on whatever cylinders they already have in storage.

“We are managing with the cylinders that we have right now,” he said. “To conserve LPG, we have reduced the preparation of certain dishes. Chinese items at live counters have been stopped, parottas have been removed from menus, and dishes such as dosa and puri are being served only during peak meal hours.”

Restaurants are trying to stretch their existing fuel supplies for as long as possible, but industry leaders say this strategy can only work for a limited time.

Smaller Hotels Face the Biggest Risk

While larger hotels may have backup solutions, smaller eateries and budget restaurants are expected to bear the brunt of the crisis.

Coimbatore district is home to thousands of small food establishments that rely entirely on LPG cylinders. Due to safety regulations and routine inspections, most restaurants operating within city limits are not allowed to use firewood for cooking.

This restriction means smaller restaurants have no alternative fuel source if LPG runs out.

If fresh cylinder supplies are not restored within the next few days, many of these establishments may be forced to temporarily shut down operations.

Star Hotels Less Affected Due to Electric Equipment

Despite the ongoing LPG shortage, star-rated hotels and large restaurants are expected to experience a relatively smaller impact.

A general manager of a major restaurant in Coimbatore explained that many premium establishments have already invested in advanced kitchen equipment powered by electricity. These systems reduce their reliance on LPG cylinders for cooking.

“We use LPG only for limited operations because most of our equipment runs on electricity,” the manager said. “So compared to smaller restaurants, we will be less affected by the current cylinder supply issue.”

Global Events Affecting Local Businesses

The situation highlights how international conflicts can influence everyday life and local businesses thousands of kilometers away. The Israel–Iran tensions have already begun affecting global energy logistics, and disruptions in fuel supply chains can quickly ripple down to local industries such as hospitality and food services.

For now, restaurants in Coimbatore are hoping that LPG supply will resume soon. Until then, customers may continue to see shorter service hours, simplified menus, and limited availability of certain popular dishes.

If the supply crisis continues for several more days, the city’s vibrant restaurant scene could face significant operational disruptions.
