California witnessed another tragic night of gun violence on Saturday when a child’s birthday celebration at a banquet hall in Stockton turned into chaos after a sudden mass shooting. The incident, which unfolded on Lucille Avenue, left four people dead and at least ten others seriously injured, according to local officials.
Authorities confirmed that a total of 14 people were struck by gunfire, including both children and adults who had gathered for the birthday event. Four victims succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to the hospital, while several others remain in critical condition.
San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office (SJCSO) is leading the investigation and has described the shooting as a deeply disturbing and violent attack on a community gathering. Officials said emergency teams responded within minutes and transported the injured victims to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment.
Deputy Mayor Condemns the Attack
Stockton’s Deputy Mayor, Jason Lee, expressed his grief and outrage in a Facebook post shortly after the tragedy.
“My heart is extremely heavy today,” he wrote. “I am devastated and angry that a child’s birthday party in California has turned into the site of a mass shooting. Our community deserves to know the truth, and the families of the victims deserve justice and every possible support.”
Community members echoed this sentiment, calling for accountability and stronger safety measures as the investigation continues.
Children and Adults Among the Victims
Witnesses described the atmosphere as one of joy and celebration moments before gunfire erupted inside the banquet hall. Families had gathered for the child’s birthday when shots suddenly rang out, sending guests scrambling for cover.
SJCSO spokesperson Heather Brent stated during a press briefing that early findings suggest the attack may have been premeditated. “At this stage, our top priority is identifying the shooter,” Brent said. She added that the investigative team is interviewing witnesses, reviewing video footage, and gathering forensic evidence from the scene.
Although investigators have confirmed the number of victims, they have not yet released details about their ages or identities, nor have they disclosed any information about a possible suspect. The shooter remains unidentified, prompting heightened caution among local residents.

Police Lock Down the Area
Law enforcement officers cordoned off several blocks around Lucille Avenue on Saturday night, urging the public to avoid the area as detectives processed evidence. Patrol units continued to monitor the neighborhood throughout the night to prevent any further incidents.
Authorities are appealing to anyone with information, videos, or firsthand accounts to come forward to assist the investigation.

Residents Initially Mistook Gunfire for Fireworks
Several locals reported that the gunshots were so rapid and loud that they initially believed fireworks were being set off as part of the birthday celebration.
One witness recalled, “We were nearby celebrating another child’s birthday. When we heard the loud bursts, we honestly thought someone was lighting fireworks. It took us a moment to realise it was gunfire, not celebration.”
The incident has left the California community shaken and grieving, with many expressing fear over the growing frequency of mass shootings at public gatherings.
As investigators continue their search for the perpetrator, city officials have promised full transparency and pledged support for the families affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.
